To be fair, this blog idea was planted in my mind from a Facebook Mom's Group mom who said: "Cow's milk is donor milk too". How right she is! We try to feed our babies and children (and families!) as healthy as we can. Sometimes we select organic over non-organic, name brands over generic, and often we choose soy or almond over cow milk. But why? Is it because we don't know the COW personally? No!
We have all (mostly) indulged in some milk or cheese or yogurt from time to time without wondering if the cow smoked or drank alcohol or had a balanced diet. We tend to think: if it is in this carton, it must have been packaged safely.
Well, that is how I feel about donor breast milk. If someone took the time to pump milk, label it, freeze it, go on a website and post it (for free!!!) 9 times out of 10, that gesture came from the heart. I could never think that drug addicts or people who eat cheetos for 3 meals a day, would be the same people to donate milk.
The first choice for baby should be breast milk. If it comes from another mom, yes, make sure the best you can that she is healthy and donating for the right reasons. After that, it is really up to you. Do you want the best milk you can get for your baby or will you let fear take that advantage from you?
