Moms, we are not cows. We do not produce the same milk that is in dairy, whey or casein. Yes, any dairy products we consume will pass through our breast milk and irritate baby, but that is something we can control!
Eliminating dairy completely from your diet will without a doubt be a challenge. But isn't that exactly what parenting is?! Giving up and sacrificing things that we want/like to do what is best for our babies.
You don't drink alcohol or smoke when you are breastfeeding or pregnant. You gave up soft cheese and some of you even gave up lunch meat! Wouldn't you rather give up one year (or so!) of dairy products for yourself than give your baby can after can of powdered replacement milk? *Gasp!*
Well, if you decide to do what is best for your baby and continue to breastfeed, I promise to be there to support you. Cookies, Then Milk! mixes can be dairy free. Just ask. I will work with you to replace those (evil!) chocolate chips in the mix with something your baby can tolerate that is still delicious! Raisins? Cranberries? Even dairy free chocolate chips! The possibilities are endless!
Do yourself and your baby a favor. Start getting used to the sacrifices we all make and start going dairy free for your sensitive baby. You will not look back in 20 years and say "Damn, I missed having cheese on my burgers".
But you might look back and say "I wish I had breastfed longer".
